Briggs praises the increase in volunteers across Edinburgh but challenges more men to give their time.
Lothian Tory MSP Miles Briggs today posed the question in Parliament, to the Communities Secretary MSP Angela Constance, of what was being done to “encourage people who haven’t ever volunteered to give their time to charities”. According to Volunteer Edinburgh the amount of volunteers in the capital has been continuing to rise with 35% of Edinburgh’s population giving their time to local charities. However, 61% of local charities still require more volunteer’s, with a lack of male volunteers a particular issue for some charities who require men to work alongside the men who use their service.
Speaking afterwards Miles said:
“I applaud all the people of Edinburgh who are so generous in giving their time and making such a difference to others lives.
“There is still more that could be done, in particular I challenge more men who haven’t ever volunteered to get involved with charities that support other men.
“I thank Volunteer Edinburgh for all their good work and their recent research on volunteer numbers in Edinburgh”
