12 Cases of Polio Worldwide
Politicians across all political parties came together on Thursday, World Polio Day, to support Purple 4 Polio by wearing purple crocus buttonholes. The colour purple is used for the campaign because when children in the developing world are vaccinated their “pinkies” are dyed purple. This is done so that no child is missed when giving the vaccines. Polio is the closest that it has ever been to eradication, with only 12 cases reported this year, from 350,000 cases across 125 countries 30 years ago, when the Global Polio Eradication Initiative launched. The event was organised by Rotary International in Scotland.
Miles Briggs, Lothian MSP, comments:
“Firstly, thank you to Rotary International Scotland for putting on this excellent event. The Purple 4 Polio campaign has done incredible work towards the eradication of Polio forever. They are so close to their goal of eradicating this virus so that it never inflicts anyone ever again.”
