Health Secretary unable to give a date for reopening of St John’s Children’s ward.

Health Secretary unable to give a date for reopening of St John’s Children’s ward.

Health Secretary Shona Robison has been unable to give a firm date for the reopening to inpatients of the children’s ward at St John’s Hospital in Livingston. In a Parliamentary answer to Lothian Conservative MSP Miles Briggs, Ms Robison states that NHS Lothian aims to “return to a full service within the children's ward at St John’s Hospital as soon as possible after the summer.” The Health Secretary also failed to offer any guarantees that the ward would not face repeat closures to inpatients in future years. Miles tabled a series of written Parliamentary questions on the issue on behalf of concerned Lothian constituents where he also asked about help with additional transport costs for West Lothian families and the impact of the extra patient load on the Sick Kids’ Hospital/

Speaking today Miles said:

“ West Lothian families will be disappointed that we still have no date for the reopening fully of this vital children’s ward.

“ In the meantime, potentially many dozens of local families face the extra stress and costs of travelling to and from the Sick Kids’ Hospital in Edinburgh to be with their child.

“ I will continue to urge the Scottish Government to make this a priority issue and work with NHS Lothian to implement the long term solutions required to allow the ward both to reopen without delay and stay open on a sustainable basis.”
