Briggs Calls for Complimentary Tickets For Schools and Youth Groups to Attend the European Championships

Miles Briggs, MSP, today in Parliament called for complimentary tickets to be made available to schools and youth groups, so that they can watch the European Championships which will be held during August this year.

This is the inaugural year for the European Championship that will be held across the two host cities Glasgow and Berlin. The new Championship is an amalgamation of several existing championships. Glasgow will hold the swimming, cycling, rowing, triathlon and gymnastics events. There will also be diving in Edinburgh and golf at Gleneagles golf course. The European Athletics Championships will be held in Berlin.

There will be 52 countries competing at the European Championships in Glasgow, with over 3,000 athletes travelling to Glasgow to compete and 3,000 volunteers.

Miles Briggs comments today:

“This is a significant boost to Glasgow and Scotland’s profile and reputation as a host destination of choice for major sporting events.

“As a Lothian MSP I am personally delighted that the diving competition will take place at the Royal Commonwealth Pool here in Edinburgh.

“This Championship is an excellent opportunity to inspire a new generation of young people in Scotland. I urge Ministers to ensure that as many primary and secondary school pupils as possible are given the opportunity to enjoy the competitions.

“I have asked Ministers to set out their plans to ensure that Scotland’s young people can benefit as much as possible from what is such a major international sporting event taking place on our doorstep. I believe that helping our  youngsters to watch the Championship in person will create an active legacy of encouraging more people to participate in sport and exercise.

“Volunteers will play an integral role in the running of running of the European Championship and strategy should be put in place to facilitate the retention of these volunteers in community sports and activities.

“Finally, I would like to wish all the athletes that make up Team GB the very best for a successful Championship.”
