Briggs Calls for more Widespread Use of Healthy Lifestyle Programmes
Miles Briggs, MSP, would like to see more widespread availability of healthy lifestyle programmes, such as Edinburgh Leisure’s “Get Moving Programme”. The programme supports people to make small changes to their diet and lifestyle to help them to manage their weight and become more active. The programme is funded by NHS Lothian, available by referral from a GP and is free of charge. To be eligible for the programme individuals need to have a BMI of over 30 and weigh less than 25 stone and 3 pounds.
“This is an excellent programme that has the potential to make a huge difference to peoples lives.
“The Get Moving Programme receives on average 300 referrals a year.
“With two thirds of Scots being overweight this means that about 400,000 Lothian residents could benefit from this programme.
“More needs to be done to raise awareness and availability of these types of programmes.”
